This is a rough draft. It is going to be scored based on content, so please tell me if I should add or delete anything. Also, it is not for school or a grade, so don't tell me to do my homework by myself... Don't say anything about grammer because I will have it all fixed later. & tell me which body paragraphs are the most strongest ( 3 ) Thanks!
“Humanity's true moral test, its fundamental test…consists of its attitude towards those who are at its mercy: animals.” A Harry Potter character, Sirius Black, once said, “If you want to know what a man's really like take a look at how he treats his inferiors, not his equals”. Moral and ethical behavior towards animals is necessary because people who abuse animals turn into criminals, animals are capable of harm, yet they don’t harm us, and animals suffer from fear and pain, so they need to be protected from this harm.
“He who is cruel to animals becomes hard also in his dealings with men. We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals.”Anyone who can inflict torture upon an animal lacks empathy. They take joy and pleasure in watching an innocent animal being tormented. These people can best be defined as psychopaths. Ignoring psychopaths abusing animals is just as bad as ignoring psychopaths abusing human beings. Many of the psychopaths were animal abusers before they turned on their fellow humans. Think back to the Columbine shooting where 13 lives were taken by 2 killers. Yes, they too tortured animals and mutilated them. How can we allow animal suffering while we are struck horrified by the sufferings of our own specie?
In addition, animals are capable of great harm. In many incidents, an animal may harm a human in order to protect itself. Rarely do you hear of a family dog killing a member. If the dog wanted, it could instantly kill a human with a right bite to the neck. Why do we not hear of these issues? Why aren’t pets illegal? It is because they choose not to inflict harm, even when they are perfectly capable. So why do people harm animals when they don’t have to? Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should. Ironically, this message can be best understood by studying animal behavior, for they do not harm humans even though they can.
The question is not, "Can they reason?" nor, "Can they talk?" but rather, "Can they suffer?" Did you know that the basic function of the nervous system that processes fear and pain is basically the same in humans and other mammals? They feel the same pain that we do. So shouldn’t we put more effort into treating these kindly? There’s a portion of the brain the reacts because of emotion. This reaction is seen in both people and animals. Doesn’t that mean animals have emotions too? Many animals such as elephants and bears often appear to be sad when a loved one has died.
What if you don’t mutilate the animal you snatched? You can still be harming you pets unintentionally. Have you ever forgotten to give the cat water? Or leave the dog in the car on a hot day locked up while you run to the food market? Would you ever leave a toddler in the hot car alone? Or forget to give it the milk it needs? Most people who abuse animals don’t do it intentionally, and this is what is truly scary. Animals have fallen to the back of our minds. They are second thoughts, and treated as living toys. Have you seen a dog outside a house on a cold rainy day? What if YOU were stuck outside while rain poured down heavily during the winter? How long will we look at these animals and think “they are only animals”? Isn’t that what people thought about the Jewish people being tortured beyond comprehension? Now we look back and regret just letting it go. It won’t be long before we finally realize the cruelty of our actions.
