Ann Barrett knew exactly what she would do if she won a family holiday in a competition run by Hybu Cig Cymru – give it to her daughter Gail Evans.

Ann thought the holiday at the Bluestone eco-friendly park in Pembrokeshire, given away as part of a Welsh Lamb promotion in Co-op stores, was just the tonic that Gail and her young family needed after a horrific incident in Turkey last July.

Gail and her nine-year-old daughter Cassie suffered severe burns after being doused with petrol and set alight during a beach party. They were airlifted to Wales by Air Ambulance and spent several weeks in Morriston Hospital’s Intensive Care and Burns units.

Thankfully, both are now recovering at home after their life-threatening experience.

“Gail was on holiday in Turkey with her family, staying in a five star hotel when she and Cassie approached an organised party on the hotel beach,” said Ann, of Llantwit Fardre near Pontypridd. “A member of the hotel’s animation team was carrying an open jug of petrol which he threw towards a smouldering fire drum. Unfortunately, petrol also splattered Gail and Cassie. It ignited, and both Gail and Cassie were set ablaze.

“Gail suffered third degree burns to 29 per cent of her body along with flash burns. Most seriously affected was her upper body. She underwent major skin grafting, and will need further operations. Cassie suffered flash burns to her face as well as third degree burns to her arms and hands.

“In future, Cassie and especially Gail will need to protect their skin from direct sunlight, so holidays in hot sunny countries are out of the question.”
