fiat punto 2000 not working?

i have a fiat punto, was driving it started making nosies when changing gear i was going up a hill and the car stoped totaly cut out, i couldnt get it out of gear, took the handbrake off to try and roll down to get out of middle of road and the car wouldnt move, anyone have any ideas of what could be wrong?
*dont know why the car stopped everything just cut out.
*we tried everything to get it out of gear, using the clutch had no effect
 
The reason it wouldn't roll back is because it's in gear, the reason you couldn't get it out of gear is that when the engine stalls sometimes it sticks in gear. Did you not try and use the clutch pedal, or did that have no effect?
If it had no effect then it sounds like the clutch has failed, either the hydraulics or through terminal wear.

We have no idea why it suddenly stopped from the info you've given us, sounds like a trip to the garage is called for.

EDIT: So the clutch or gearbox has failed.
