I have a gateway computer that i formatted and a dell that has an os. can i use a usb-usb cord to connect them for file sharing without giving the gateway an os? If I cant is there a way to connect the two? ((( Ive tried to slave the gateway to the dell but it never works. T_T ))))
Alright... yay... an answer. now... the harddrive says it is a master and is refusing to bend to my yolk. Will the ehd case work in this situation?
Both of the hds are masters so can i turn the formatted one into an external with the case?

Double check to that the jumper is set to slave and that the bios says it's a slave (and that the IDE cable is plugged in right). You will need to then go to computer manage (right click my computer and choose management then "Disk Management" and choose to format the hard drive (if it wasn't formatted with a file system yet, one recognized by windows) you added. Once that is done you can now use it as a slave.)

IF that doesn't work... Then you can buy a External Hard Drive case. You can plug in a IDE hard drive and then plug it in via USB to your computer, this is great for pulling data off old hard drives too. they are around 30-40 dollars.

EDIT: It sould NOT matter what computer the hard drive came from... they are not dell or gateway brands but a different brand they usually contract with (ones you can walk into any computer store and buy).

IN REPLY: Yes when you plug it in as USB it shouldn't matter how the jumper is set. I've used this on several computers (and even ones where the OS was completely trashed) and it worked like a charm. What it really is (when you plug it in a case) is pretty much the same thing as if you bought a "External Hard drive". You can use this as your permanet storage and bring it with you anywhere to any computer :)
