First bike, get a Harley?

I know, "caught in the Harley hype", but I want to buy American. I am open to suggestions and I have been looking at the 1200 Sportster and the Wide Glide. I am 6'2" 215 lbs, and about to leave Iraq on leave. Cant wait to get on a bike, and want to get some outside opinions.

Your first bike should be a second-hand 250cc dirtbike. Ride that for a year, and you'll know enough about the kind of rider you are to buy an appropriate motorcycle.
