ninja's? 250cc 400cc 500cc gpz's are nice and cheap on insurace

Well first of all the Ninja is not a sport bike, I mean not a serious single-purpose sport bike. Which is good. Real sportbikes (like GSX-R or R6) are not easy to ride, not for beginners. The phrase 'starter sports bike' is an oxymoron. 8^)

The Ninja is a 'standard', a general-purpose bike, which is what you want to learn on.

I agree you're probably too big for a 250 or 300. But how a bike fits is totally subjective. Find one and sit on it and you might decide it's a bit cramped. Your weight will not be a problem since these bikes can carry two people anyway.

Now we get the starter-bike question here a lot and lots of people insist you should start on a 250 because it's small and light and easy to manage. Which it is. But a 250 can't cruise at highway speeds, it's meant for in-town and secondary roads. So even if it fits you, it depends on how you see yourself riding. If you plan to do more than 3 or 4 miles on the highway, you want something bigger. 500 and 650cc are like the next size up, they're 'medium sized'. A 500 or 650cc Ninja wold make a great learning bike, I think. Yes, it's bigger/heavier than the 250, but a normal person should be able to handle it. At 6'2" even these bikes might feel a little small to you.

650cc is NOT too powerful. If you ride like a grownup, you only use as much power as you need. And it's good to have some extra power in reserve for when you need it, like when you want to pass someone in a hurry. The bike's not going to just run away with you like a horse might. 8^)

You might also look at Honda 599, Suzuki GS500 and SV 650, Kawasaki FZR 600 ('Fazer'), etc. There are a lot of 'medium-sized' standards.

$2500 is a good price for a Ninja 650 if it's in good shape, if it's been properly cared for. There are many website with tips on what to look for in a used motorcycle. Google 'buying a used motorcycle' and you'll see them.

You're not that tall, you're just heavy, and getting any sports bike will be stupid as you will weigh almost as much as it and therefore it will be horrible to ride. Also a 600cc sports bike will be far too powerful and unforgivving for a novice so (and sorry to be blunt here, but you weigh almost twice as much as I do and I'm 6ft and 30) either get on a diet and get a 400cc sports bike, or look to cruisers (ideally Jap rather than Harley's) as they'd suit your build better.
