First time traveling but my passport is expired.?

Im finally gonna travel and i'm a U.S citizen and i want to travel from New York to Kentucky by airplane this december but my passport is expired. Will i need my passport even though i'm going travel with in the U.S from New York to Kentucky? And if so how long will it take to renew it cause I wanna leave on the 22 of december.

You do not need a u.s. passport to travel to different states. 100% positive. i go in and out of states all the time and even if you wernt born in this country it doesnt matter.
