It's my first trip to Boston - I've done a bunch of research and have my plane ticket and bought us Go Boston Cards to help "save" some money. BUT - I'm confused about where to stay. What's the difference between North Boston, South Boston, Copley, Theater District, and then all of the outlying areas? Where is the best place for a couple of tourists to stay? Safe area to walk around at night? Restaurants nearby? The T within walking distance? I'd like to keep it under about $200 a night, but will have to be creative to do that, I know. Also, I'm wondering how I get from the airport to my hotel. Do I take my luggage on the T? That seems so odd! :) Any information you can give would be appreciated!!

Your best bet is to either stay at the Radisson in Boston or stay in Cambridge. They have nice hotels there. I live right outside Boston. All those areas you mentioned are T assessable which is good. I take my luggage on the T when going to South Station to get the Amtrak train. Lots of people take their luggage on the T you will not feel out of place.

Both Holiday Inns in Cambridge and Somerville are T assesable to Boston so no worries.

If you want under $200 a night you won't find that directly in Boston, you will have to go to either Cambridge or Somerville and stay at a Holiday Inn.
