for all u vets and dog/puppy experts out there???

how do u keep a puppy from eating everything off the ground and floor?? he keeps eating dirt and frass and leaves and everytime we take him to the vet they say hes got worms. and its probably from all the stuff hes eating like dirt. so how do i stop him from eating everything wen i take him out for walks??
 
I'm a vet. I also taught dog obedience for 15 years. First off, when your dog tries to eat off the ground/floor, say in a loud and commanding voice, "No" and step in front of what he is about to eat. Move away from the object and if he tries again, repeat the process. Once he stops, praise him/her and give a treat. During the walk, if he tries to eat something, try to make him ignore the object, and keep walking. If he goes for the object, try the no trick. Or try to show him a treat, or his favorite toy.
