KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- You probably saw David Block and his wife Vicki in the background while watching Game 3 of the American League Championship Series.
The Blocks, with son Alex, 26 years old and witnessing his first Royals playoff appearance, behind them, were sitting in seats 1 and 2 of Row A in section 122, right behind the visiting Baltimore Orioles' dugout and in background of any camera shots towards right-handed hitters.
Much like many long-time Royals fans, David Block had a custom shirt printed for the Royals' playoff run and he was wearing it proudly on Tuesday night.
Yes, his shirt says one wife, three kids and nine dogs. When TV cameras focused in on Block's shirt during the early part of Tuesday's game, we took notice. Nine dogs? We had to find out the story behind it, so we found the Blocks and asked David about his shirt.
"I'm just happy he's only had one wife," Vicki joked.
While nine dogs may seem like a lot, it's because the Blocks are dog lovers. And their current pets are counted on Block's shirt.
"Usually about two or three dogs at a time – we have three right now," David Block said.
The number of dogs on Block's shirt could have been higher too. In the time between the Royals' last playoff appearance in 1985 and 2014, Alex Block said the family has had 13 dogs live with them. But don't worry, it's for a very good reason; the Blocks have served as a foster home for dogs.
However, 13 was probably too high a number for the shirt. You don't want any weird assumptions.
David and Vicki will be in the same spot Thursday for Game 4, They were there in those same seats cheering on the Royals in the 1985 World Series while Vicki was pregnant with their oldest child, a girl.
Now, three kids later, the Royals are one win away from increasing the number on the bottom line of David's shirt.
