A direct variation equation is one in the form of y = kx, where k is some constant. Simply plug in the x-value and the y-value into that equation, solve for k, and then rewrite the equation.

Example:
y = kx
(2) = k(2)
k = 1
Thus; y = 1x = x.

y = kx
(-4) = k(-8)
k = ½
Thus: y = ½x
