I'm a nursing student so I've learned about what bruits are and what they mean. I'm only 19 years old and I thought I felt a thrill in my carotid artery so I used my stethoscope to listen to it and I hear the swishing sound characteristic of a bruit. This really concerns me but I have no medical insurance. I'm not sure what I should do. Any thoughts?
Queryman, you could be right. This is scary and I would love to see a cardiologist, but I have no health insurance and my family is poor to put it bluntly. This poses an issue in receiving health care.

Read carefully and especially the last sentence, then go to a doctor, or your hospital or if you have a training hospital seek out the nursing or diagnostic technician for further information.

It is possible that you could be having Aortic Stenosis. Why?

The murmur of aortic stenosis is typically a mid-systolic ejection murmur, heard best over the “aortic area” or right second intercostal space, with radiation into the right neck. This radiation is such a sensitive finding that its absence should cause the physician to question the diagnosis of aortic stenosis. It has a harsh quality and may be associated with a palpably slow rise of the carotid upstroke.

You must consult a cardiologist. I will be glad if I am wrong!
