Free International Texting App for a Nokia 5250?

If I have a Nokia 5250 phone does anyone know how I can text a friend in America from China for free? I've seen this one thing called Vopium but I can't tell if the friend also downloads Vopium can we text for free? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated!! :)
