I'm going to paris and then bordeaux, and i was wondering if there is a special data plan or something that i could buy ahead of time so that i don't come back home witha $2,000 bill? does such a thing exist?? any other ideas?

You must call to your network provider and enquire about the roaming charges. If you are satisfied with the charges, proceed to activate it with a request. Anyway international roaming charges always fetch you a lump bill. So it is better to unlock your iPhone and use it with a local SIM card from the country where your are. It wont cost you much.
