Good authors for a friend in hospital please.?

Hey, one of my female friends is spending some time in hospital after some major surgery. I want to do something for her boredom as she is spending day after day in a hospital bed. I know she likes to read and I have seen her reading books by; Sophie Kinsella, Melissa Nathan, Tess Gerristen. But I cant think of anymore now. She is 16.

So does anyone have any suggestions of similar authors. Thank you.

Also are people allowed portable DVD players in hospitals because I was thinking of buying her one and a few DVD's to watch.

If she likes the Shopaholic series, she may like the Nanny Diaries. I'd also suggest Cynthia Baxter who does a nice, light, mystery series about a vet in a mobile office who solves crime. Along the Tess Gerritson line, maybe Linda Fairstien or Kathy Reichs? They do Forensic type mysteries.
