Google Goggles app on Android...how does it work?

I've downloaded this app because i heard good things about it...but im not sure what its actual purpose is and what you can and cant 'scan' or take pictures of.

you can take pictures of objects and find them on the internet. like if you don't know what a type of shoe or logo or something is, this takes a picture and does a web search. if you open the app it tells you more about it. though it sometimes doesn't work with apparel, furniture, and animals.
