Gossip girl SpinOff question?

What is the deal with the Gossip Girl spinoff. Personally, I don't see the point of the spinoff at all since we (sorta) already know whats going to happen! It seems like it could be done in some sort of flashback......
But anyway Is Lily still going to be on the regular Gossip Girl show?
