Guys, why on earth would he come onto me, plan to meet me then back out so suddenly?

Ok so I met this guy a month ago. He came up to me, invited me to a fundraiser of his friends. I could tell there was a connection, we have some mutual friends though I don't know him well at all. He invited me to it. He gave me the details. I texted him teh next day, saying I couldn't make it cause of so and so, he replied saying its fine etc. So a week later, I asked him out for a drink via text. He responded pretty fast saying yes and suggesting the next week. I responded suggesting a day and its been 4 days, no response.

So what happened here? Why do guys just suddenly lose interest? Please help me understand, I know there could be a gazillion reasons. But, honestly, what the heck!
