Has anybody seen/read The Last Temptation of Christ? Thoughts?

I'm talking about either the Nikos Kazantzakis book or the Martin Scorsese film adaptation. I'm an atheist, but I first saw the movie when I was still a Catholic. I don't really want to say what I thought of it, because I'm afraid it will skew the answers. Has anybody read it or seen it? Does anybody refuse to read it or see it? On what grounds do you refuse? Thanks in advance for the answers.

It was very moving. So moving that I would not see it again because it was so upsetting.

The book and the film.

I enjoy Scorsese's version (I got the chance to see it in a theatre), but the book is much better. My Greek friend tells me it's because Greeks are better than Italians. And then I throw yogurt in his face.

No, but it sounds interesting to see Jesus from a different perspective.

I read the book and saw the movie.

The book was much better than the movie.

I liked it, I thought it had some interesting ideas. Basically, the theme was that the temptation offered by Satan wasn't kingdoms and riches, it was to just live as a regular man. I liked the scene where Jesus meets Paul. Paul says how he's going to change Jesus' message and tell all the people. Jesus says he was going to stop Paul from doing that. Paul says something like "You can try, but they won't listen to you."

Personally, I don't think it takes anything away from the teachings of Christianity; it was just an alternate view, kind of like science fiction.

Since one of my interests is studying religions, I found it fascinating. Quite a different take on the man Jesus.

Great movie. Willem Dafoe is one of my favorite actors because he seems to pick parts that are deep.
