Did he wear make-up in Death in Venice because of "fashion," or was it a symbol of plague?

Had to read the Thomas Mann novel in German class, Tod in Venedig. Hate Mann's writing, gives me writer's block and mental indigestion. In the novel you mention it is supposedly a fashion, but everything to Mann is a symbol of death. Feh!!!
