HD and Blu-Ray?

I get the idea of HD, which simply utilises more pixels increasing the resolution, but what the hell is blu-ray and can you play a DVD of one of these formats on a player which uses another. If not, what are the differences and advantages?

HD-DVD and Blu-Ray are high definition DVD for movies that supports 1080p resolution on high defintion teleivisions. Both formats are completely different from another and cannnot be played on each others dvd player.

Currently HD-DVD format no longer exists because movie studios have decided that will support Sony's format of Blu-Ray which offers up to 50 GB of storage of high defintions. It support Dolby HD sound as well as DTS-HD. It will support picture and picture capabilities and features a lot of bonus materials from movie studios while you are watching a movie.

The cheapest Blu-Ray DVD player will cost your around $399.99 which is the Sony Playstation 3 which has Blu-Ray built into the console. However if you want to just buy a regular Blu-Ray DVD player it will cost $399.99 to $499.00. Blu-Ray dvd players can play regular standard DVD as well.
 
HD DVD is now obsolete since blu ray won the format wars. Blu-ray is format its disc can hold about 50 Gigs of information which mean is can hold up 1080p resolution and much more info. Blu ray is just a player that is like a dvd player but plays HD content which is called blu ray. It can also up convert regular dvds up to 1080p.
 
HD is now a dead or dieing format. Kind of like Beta vs. VHS. I would not worry about the differences (if you are still check out US Toady as they had an article on it about two months ago) cause HD is on its' way out. Blue Ray will be the only option, not choice.
