Help! My friend who I'm not on talking terms with- I just found out his

mom died - do I contact him or no? I have/(had?) a long term friend of many years but we've stopped talking for many months due to a huge fight. I feel bad because I found out he's burrying his mother today (in his hometown out of state). Is this a bad time to contact him for condolences? Should I send an email expressing Im sorry? I don't want to cause him more pain at this time and also I do have pride and it would be hard contacting him after everything that transpired between us. What do you think is the best thing to do? BTW He'll know I know because we are both on an email list that announced the bad news.
