Hi all, you may or may not have seen a few posts regarding the post-apocalyptic nuclear disaster book I am writing. I'm using the snowflake method and have come to the point where I need to make a synopsis.
Basically, I have two options for the ending a) The main character's wife can end up dying in the end, after he tries to save her, and in his rage he kills every one at the encampment, disregarding his own life. I want to use this to show just how savage human nature would become in that sort of environment, both in that the wife is murdered for no reason and that a normal guy can go to killing everyone in one moment. I'm not a psychotic freak or anything who like blood and death, I just think that would be a powerful ending to a novel of that sort.
I'm not sure, however, if this would scare people away from reading, or buying, the book. That is why I could just otherwise b), let her live, giving a happy and uplifting mood to a book that otherwise will have a "disastrous" and gloomy mood.
What do you guys think, go with the more powerful ending, or make a more uplifting ending (which I'm sure could be just as powerful) so that it wouldn't scare people away?
Thanks in advance
oops I didn't mean to ask this again haha. oh well you guys can still answer.
I was thinking of making him kill himself at the end, though not for the same reasons. I think he would because he lost his wife, has no means to live, and has nothing left in his life. In that sort of world there would hardly be any remorse, IMO.
Thanks, I'll give that idea a run through for a couple weeks and see if I like it hehe.
I hear you man, that's why I'm asking haha. I believe that either ending could be very powerful if I write it right, but like you said, it shouldn't be forced. I want to write option a, but I just wanted to make sure that option a wouldn't make people scared of the book. I think I'll put something in there that would make the ending sort of balance out. Has anyone read The Road, it's a great novel?(spoiler lol) It ends with the dad dying, but the kid finds a new family to go with. I might make something like that happen. Not specifically like that, but a balancing ending.
