I have a bad habit of gossip about my very best friend. It's really been weighing on my conscience lately and I know I need to change. How do I tell my friends that I will no longer be making jokes or talking about my best friend in a negative way?

This is a real problem...Apparently she isn't your best friend if you don't have enough self-control to keep your mouth shut if it will not benefit her or you. A way to stop gossiping about her is to remember that even though you are talking about her, you are making a reflection on yourself, so think of it is "How will these people see me if they think I'm just a gossiper?" kind of thing.
Not trying to say it in a bad way, but people most times keep their mouth shut when they know it will impact themselves negatively. Maybe this will work for you.
Another way is to change the subject when it gets to her. If they say how ugly her shirt is, change it to a story when you found the cutest hidden shirt in a shop or something. Just DO NOT make it obvious that you are trying to avert their attention from her to you. That is just another way they will try to force you to say something bad.
If you are the "life of the party" when you're telling jokes, I suggest you start acting a little more quiet. This will give you a mysterious air, while saving you and your friend from humiliation.
You COULD also just put your foot down and flat out tell them that they should avoid the topic of your BEST FRIEND at all costs if they value their lives or something. Don't be dramatic about it, but be cool, act like you're too cool to gossip.
Or, you could tell your friend about what you have been doing and tell her that you are sorry, but really this should not be happening in the first place. That way, if you do the one above, you would be the first person to tell her about your mistakes instead of her hearing it from a third party that would make it sound A LOT worse than what it was. Evaluate your times with those people and see where it only got funny when they were talking about her without her knowledge.
Not saying that you're a bad person, but I have been down this road before, I only changed my ways when one of my friends said (in these exact words) "I can always count on you Tobi, you're the best person to get gossip from!" and that just rang in my head ever since.
Hoped this helped.

step one tell your friend who your talking crap about or making fun of. why do this? becuase its better that she hears it from YOU than one of her friends.
step two apologize face to face. make a vow to not do this.
step three realize that she might be mad and need some time alone when apologizing give something to her chocolate or something that you two share a memory inside joke idk.
step four tell your friends and say sorry. now if you do this to more than mulitple people and not just one person then do all of these ^^^ with them. good luck.

other option just stop making fun of someone. just stop and theyll catch up.

You're a bad friend. Making people laugh at someone else's sake is terrible. You should be ashamed of yourself. I'm sure there's plenty of things to make fun of you for. Learn to be a good person.
