What I'm wondering is- Is this just a basic speaker system that I can plug into my TV, outlets, or whatever and use it? Or do I need some $1000 expensive receiver?
 
You can connect composite cables ( red & white ) from cable box or TV to system for audio.
 
you can use it just like it is, you don't need a $1000 receiver. BUT , it is garbage. bought a coby system just like this and when i got it home and set it up, sh!t came out. not crap, but real sh!t. coby is trash, just below sony. if you need to spend a few extra bucks, do it, it's worth it to stay away from this waste byproduct.
