How are the 2000 Volkswagen golf 1.4 E for a first car.?

On average are they cheap or overly expensive on insurance? I couldn't see them being too high as they are very slow by the looks of things, however I've heard volkswagens are expensive for first drivers.
Everyone gets a corsa so i want something different. I've also been looking at citroen c2 1.4 furio.
