I want to build something like suggested on this site I found:

But I don't know how and it does not provide enough detail how to. The vacuum should be able to pick up items of varying weights, from a few grams to no more than 1/2 pound.

If your hand held vacuum creates a perfect vacuum, then you have atmospheric pressure available to "hold onto" something. Atm pressure is about 14.7 lbs per square inch. So, if your vacuum gripper has a suction cup that is 1 square inch in area, you could pick up a 14.7 lb object (if the surface of the object is flat and smooth enough for the suction cup to grip). In fact, you hand held vacuum will not produce a perfect vacuum and is not 100% effective so, it might pick up only 10 lbs instead of 14.7. But, if you double the area of suction cup, it will pick up twice as much weight. Good luck
