How can I check my transmission on my 1998 Mazda 626 to see what is wrong?

I pulled out of my driveway one day and when I started going my car just stopped. The transmission fluid was either very low or empty. We filled it up but the car still will not move in either gear. Any idea what I can check and how to check it? It is a 4cyl.
