How can I connect the Google Android application to the emulator ?

I have downloaded and installed the Google Android emulator but it won't become ready.
The error message in a DOS pop-up window is:
"emulator: WARNING: system partition size adjusted to match image file <84 MB > 66 MB >"
then noise from hard drive follows. nothing happens for hours. "not connected" remain displayed.
I'm using Windows XP
