How can I help my Boxer with his broken tail?

My Boxer dog was playing last night when he banged his tail and yelped. His tail was hanging in a strange position so I splinted it and took him to the emergency out of hours vet.
All the vet did was inject him with Rimadyl pain killer.,which just made him drowsy and no real effect on pain that I can note.
I am to take him to the vet on Monday morning but until then how can I assist him with making sure he does not hurt his tail again as he is so bouncy? also,anything else that I can do until then?

I thought boxers tails were docked?

Take him to an emergency vet nearby they're open 24/7.

I hope he gets better soon.
