How can I increase my download speed in the BitTorrent client Vuze?

When I first began downloading torrents, my down speed was at 200 kb/s, dipping down to about 150 kb/s average. It maxed out around 250 kb/s, but now I'm barely scraping the 40s in terms of kb/s. Why would it decrease, and how do I fix it?
@Soup: I have a medium-level download, so shouldn't that provide me with a decent number of seeds to utilize?
 
Your download speed depends on how fast others are uploading. You can't control that. Look for torrents with lots of seeders to increase your chance of a good download rate.


Edit. Even if you have a decent number of seeders, if they are uploading at a low rate, you can be screwed. You simply cannot control how fast others are uploading what you want to download. Every torrent is different.
