Hi there,
My roommate and I recently adopted pet budgies. We are students so not exactly high income, but we bought a cage together along with seed & millet for our new friends.
Her bird (Winslow) is one we got from the pet store. He is of course, scared of being handled so we are giving him his space. He has been home for about 3 days now. For the last 2 days he has been flitting about the cage, chirping and examining his new home. He is (we are guessing) about 12 weeks old, and is starting his first molt.
Tonight, we brought my bird (Darcy) home. Darcy is a hand-raised bird from a local breeder. Only about 9 weeks old, he is still a little freaked out by the thought of a new place, but is curious and has been attempting to explore the cage.
When first introduced, they flitted around the cage for about 5-10 seconds and then calmed down. For the entire evening they sat on their perches, occasionally moving around, puffing their feathers and touching their beaks together. At very first you could hear each grinding it's break a little bit.
My question is - what is the safest way to proceed? They seemed to be starting to relax around each other during daylight, and slept for a little while tonight, but at around 2:30am I heard some noise and Winslow was flitting around the cage frantically, unable to find a perch. I turned on some lights and he is now resting on the top perch, and Darcy is resting at the bottom of the cage. Both are wet since they accidentally stepped in the water dish, and I'm assuming that's why they currently have darker belly feathers.
We unfortunately can't afford a new cage, so as much as I'd like to separate them for the time being, it probably isn't feasible in the near future. Is there anything I can do to make this transition easier for them?
Thank you.
