how can i perform sit ups better?

hi! :)..i'd like to tone my lower abs..so i tried to perform sit-ups..but no matter how hard i try i can't seem to be able to lift it my back high to touch my knees, then i tried to do half-situps, but i only lifted it a few inches above the ground. I also have neck strains when do sit-ups.
