How can I recover things off computer - hard drive crashed?

I have Mac Powerbook from 5 years ago and the hard drive crashed. How can I recover things that were on it?
 
If your hard drive has crashed data can not be retrieved from it, because when a hard drive crashes all folders and files are lost including the operating system.
