I sometime use bittorrent to legally download large files. However, when downloading files from bittorrent, the bandwidth on my local network is greatly reduced. While downloading, my internet and the internet of everyone else on the network is reduced to a practically unusable point. Strangely, my download speed can be around 80 KB/s on BT, and it still throttles network traffic terribly, even though I can get up to 500 kB/s on HTTP downloads and the network is not effected. My port forwarding is fine, and my upload speed is in total only 40 kB/s

I hvae noticed this too. Try limiting the amount of connections it is making. even though the connections it is attempting to make don;t actually show up in your download speed, they still use resources.

Test your connection when with torrents turned off. 40KBps could be your upload limit. Using the max amount of upload bandwidth for torrents would cripple everyone elses speed on your network. Run a speed test and choose the speeds accordingly. If your still having problems enforce QoS on your router to limit the amount of bandwidth to the torrent computer.
