How can I tell if I have shocks or struts on my 1991 Toyota Corolla?

My rear shocks (or struts) freeze in very cold temps and this winter I'll have to replace them. How can I tell whether I have shocks or struts? I know struts are more costly to replace. I'd rather know before I trust a mechanic (not to mention I'd rather not sound too dumb). Anybody know? Thanks.

First of all I've never heard of shocks or struts freezing and someone having to replace them I live in I daho and we can see -32 F where I live this time of year, but anyway generally speaking struts look similar to shocks but they have a sheild or pan like pice of metal around them I always thought they looked like tommy guns you could look up a picture and compare also struts generally mount differently usally the top will come up into the inside of your truck or under you hood in front you should be able to see the mounting spot
