How can I train my cat out of being afraid of outdoors?

My kitten, Mew, is near a year old, about half the size of a full grown cat. I have two cats, her and her Mother. I really want to start walking them both and letting them get some exercise because I can't allow them out of the single bedroom I have at the place I'm keeping them. I don't know how the Mother cat is going to react yet, but today I tried to introduce Mew to the great outdoors.

Since birth, she's never left that bedroom, but she always seems anxious to get out to the rest of the house. Today I took her out back, and she was terrified. I know all of the sights, smells and sounds must have been overwhelming, but I want this to be a positive experience for her. Luckily she doesn't seem bothered by the harness or leash at all, but she's too scared to even leave my side! She even tried climbing up the inside of my pant leg. It was adorable, but sad all at once.

I know how to train her for the harness, because apparently it isn't a problem. I even took her off of it and she was absolutely paralyzed. I called her and she came in due time to me, but only to hide in my pants...apparently.

What can I do to break her of this fear? Should I take her out when it's nice out and let her get used to it... Maybe bring a toy or something? I want her to enjoy it, but I don't want to keep it up if she's always going to be frightened.
Outback of the house was really the most quiet place. It was very far from roads, a very quiet and peaceful town, no people or other animals, even.
