How can the characters in the show Gossip Girl simply walk into a bar

underage and buy a drink? I've just always wondered, thanks guys :)
I know it's just a tv show, but the characters are highschool students, in real life is it possible for high school students to do that, or is this just something about the show, that the writers would hope the viewers would overlook?
 
cause tv shows are makebelive.
A unicorn could popup and theyd have some random explination for it that everyone would nod their heads too.
