How can you tell if your oscar fish are mating?

I have an albino red oscar and it has dug out a hole and is laying on its side in it a lot. It is not being aggressive toward other fish going near the spot.

they kinda like hide, or swim in circles and look like they are fighting
 
Does it act normal?swimming fine? eating ok? I get the diggina hole thing because its normal but I dont think it should be laying on its side a lot. It might be stress, your water might be bad, or its just moody. Oscars get pretty moody sometimes and lay on there side.
