How come I never felt my wisdom teeth come through?

I went to the dentist a couple of years back for a checkup and was surprised to hear that I had my wisdom teeth. I was shocked, as I never felt them come through. I had no pain or discomfort or anything.

Was this a normal thing to have happened? I have heard that most people are in agony when their wisdom teeth are coming through.
