late model SUVs? Remember that Obama ad that presented the story of a family that couldn't afford health insurance for themselves and their kids.....Except the mother is seen driving around a late model SUV...That probably costs around $40,000 and taking her kids to soccer practice. If she traded in her SUV for an economy car worth just a few grand and had her kids play at the local park then she could afford health insurance. I see so many people that are on welfare and food stamps yet they have blackberries with internet phone service, drive newer cars, go on vacations to Disney World etc. What is with the entitlement generation? Why don't people prioritize and stop complaining? Why isn't their health more important than driving around a fancy gas-guzzling SUV?

Because $40/month for a cell phone is less than $800/month for adequate insurance.

And I can get a late model SUV for $6k because nobody wants to drive an American made gas guzzler.

I'm 16 and I understand you. My dad pays $500 every 2 weeks for our insurance but still has his luxuries we have a big enough tv not a flat screen, we have a house in the suburbs not a mansion, he drives a small car not a mercedes, but we still have our insurance and we have iPhones. Its about setting priorities and some people don't know where there are. Its the same thing at school. Students come to school wearing the latest Jordan's they pay $150+ for I buy Jordan's when I can, they can come to school in everything aeropostale, american eagle, uggs, polo boots, but they can't ever buy anything for their education- ie paper, calculator, or a printer. The uggs cost more than the printer. But we all have our own lives to live and I don't want their ignorance and lack of maturity to get to me. It sickens me all the time. The only thing if you are on welfare, i don't think you're allowed to own a car. I get you. It's just upsetting.

I agree that a lot of people who are broke are broke by buying what they can't afford. That is the American culture. We all have to have the newest smart phone, the shiniest cars, and the best TVs. Most of us are also in debt up to our ears so we can afford these luxury items.

Thing is, there are plenty of people who DO live within a budget, drive an older car, have a basic cell phone plan, limited frills and bells and whistles, a small entertainment budget if any, who take vacations in a tent at a nearby state campground, etc and STILL can't afford health care.

I have no kids, and am currently an independent contractor with no health benefits, but at the last job I worked that offered health insurance, it was over 300 bucks a month for crappy HMO with high deductibles, big co pays, limited coverage, and no dental or vision, and that was just for me. I could not swing an extra 300 bucks a month for crappy insurance.

Health care is insanely high, even for those that live in a budget. Sweeping generalizations get us no where. The truth is health care is pricey, and considering many of us are healthy and rarely need to see the doctor, 300+ a month is hard to justify when you can barely keep the lights on and food on the table and a roof over your head, even without all the perks you mentioned.

I got my blackberry for about $70, which is less than one half of the payment of my health insurance. And I am don't have children. Provide evidence that someone who has a late model SUV does not have health insurance. That story you refer to isn't evidence of anything. Most SUV's do not cost $40,000 and they don't have the year plastered on them.
