How could Stephen Glass fool the fast checkers at The New Republic?

Just read about Stephen Glass and also saw the movie, Shaterred Glass.Don't understand how he could fool the fact checkers at TNR.Care to explain? I mean it's okay with the fake homepage and so on, but how could the fast checkers not know that the conference room was not open on the day of the conference and that the Jukt Micronics was not even a real company? For me it kinda seems impossible...
