How did ancient Israel view religion?

It was everything to the ancient Jews. The most religious Jews today are nothing religiously when compared to the Bible Jews

For pagans it was a matter of idolatry and fertility rites, which I shall not elucidate except to say that Jews were against such practices! Jews most certainly accepted pagans who wished to be Jewish, and sometimes intermarried with non-Jews to the detriment of the Jews!

Well, They were Jewish. As for other religions, they were never racist and tolerated others. However, non-Jews didn't really even join the Israelites.
