How did dressing like an alternia become a fashionable trend now?

The whole alternative rock music and style somewhat originated from the 1990's with nirvana and grunge music. Through out the past 15 to 20 years it some how grew more and more popular amongst teenagers as a "cool" thing to do, such as the emo trend. When it first started, it was really all about kids wanting to look different because they weren't the popular ones in school. Now it's like all the kids are doing it now to be cool. How did the alternative style become such a fashionable now?
