Fire equals warmth a weapon against predators and a symbol of liberty.

More fire in the form of oil perhaps shale rock oil possible for use.

It gave him warmth and cooking made food much easier to eat. It probably also added security by adding light and discouraging predators. It probably also had other uses like curing meat or hides and keeping bugs away.

warmth-some control of environment
cooking meat and plants-some plant toxins break down in cooking. cooked meat lasts longer or is more palatable if spoiling. easier chewing.
predator protection.
illumination at night and in caves.
fire hardens wood for stronger spear points.
