How did Independent politics start?

I know that Independent person is not affiliated to any political party, so:
How was that party started?
What are its State issues?
Where it first happened?
How it happened?
Why it happened?
How it spread?


This is for a American Government project. thanks for your help.
 
Independents are people that don't have the balls to tell their true feelings and try to be friends with everyone.


You cannot "not be in a party", not choosing is choosing.
