How do cell phones and cruises work?

My boyfriend is going on a cruise to bermuda for a week and we have been trying to figure out a way to talk since I can't come. Obviously his verizon cell phone will not work there.

How can we communicate while he's over seas and without it making my bill expensive!

You will have to check with both the cruise line and your cellular service to see if service is available. The cost for a voice call is about $2.50 a minute. Receiving a text message is 5 cents and sending a text message is 50 cents. This is from my experience with Princess and Verizon. This is while on the ship. When in port you will pay whatever the international rate is.

Note that this is about half the rate of using the phone that is in your cabin.
