a few otherquestions, does the data i burn on a dvd have to be video? i only have a pack of dvd-r's and want to know if i can put my music on them. i have windows XP dell dimension e520. it doesn't recognize the dvd-r as a writable disc. please help.

You probably don't have a DVD burner, perhaps a DVD drive, but only a CD Burner?

I have a Compaq and that is how mine is set up, it plays HD DVD but does not burn DVD's.

maybe the disk is bad, or you used the disk already, or your DVD burner laser is burned out.

if you don't have a dvd reader on your cd thing on your computer that may be the problem. but the info on the dvd doesn't have to be video, you can put songs on it. however a cd player won't read a dvd. putting songs onto a dvd should only be if you have a lot of songs to transfer to another computer or if you have a portable dvd player just for songs(?)

I'm pretty sure you can put all kinds of files on a DVD CD. As far as being albe to play your music off a DVD-R...I don't think you can unless you put that DVD in your player.

If your just copying music buy some CD-RWs. I think Dvd-r discs are strictly for video, because you couldn't exactly put one of those into a stereo and expect it work. Also, if your computer doesn't recognize DVD-r discs you either don't have a DVD-RW drive or it is having issues.
