Not the light bulbs, but the actual headlight unit. The outside of the unit has gotten all scrached up and I bought new units, but under the unit something is holding and I can't see from where, please advise.

Go to the public library and look in Chilton's Auto Repair manual. You must have paid a mint for those units unless you got them used. I usually polish them back water-clear with Brasso meteal polish. Save the old units and when you have an hour, polish them clear for a spare set.
