How do I change the boot on my VW GTI?

I have a 2002 VW GTI. I am trying to change the boot on it. I have the original boot off the plastic holder and pulled up to expose the plastic ring, but cannot seem to get the plastic ring loose so I can take the gear knob off. Help!
 
you have to cut the ring off as it is not a reusable design.

You'll then have to use a hose clamp to secure the boot to the knob
 
If I remember right, the gear knob unscrews. The top portion of the boot should slide off, the bottom is snapped between the plastic ring and your center console. You have to push hard on one side of the plastic ring and lift to get it off.
